THE SUNDAY SCHOOL CONNECTION

I would like to express my appreciation to all who served in our Sunday School ministry during the 2009-10 Sunday School year. Thirty-one members of Belmont Heights served in various capacities this past year, including teachers, division and departments directors and outreach leaders. Thank you for your faithfulness and dedication to serving our Lord.

Most of our Sunday School leaders have agreed to continue in their current positions while the Church Council formulates a plan for the future direction of Belmont Heights. As a church, we face significant challenges. Our recent “State of the Church” meeting identified some of these challenges. We must understand that we cannot solve our problems, but God can. We cannot reverse the decline of more than 50 years, but God can. We do not have the plan for Belmont Heights, but God does.

At the dedication of the temple, God responded to Solomon’s prayer, “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place” (2 Chronicles 7:13-15, ESV).

On the basis of this Scripture and others, the Church Council is calling the church to a season of corporate prayer during the four Sundays in September. We will gather in the lobby of the gym each Sunday in September during the Sunday School period (9:00 A.M. – 10:15 A.M.) for a time of church-wide prayer. It is critical that all members of Belmont Heights participate in this season of prayer. Each of us must be a part of seeking God’s vision for His church.

The session leader of a Sunday School conference I recently attended provided me with new insight concerning the Scripture, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18a, KJV). The conference leader suggested that this verse, applied to a church or Sunday School, means that when a church or Sunday School has no vision, the lost people they should be reaching for Christ will perish. Vision is having God’s perspective. Vision is seeing things the way God sees them. Vision is seeing people the way God sees them. Vision is to have on our heart what is on God’s heart. There are lost people all around us -- in our neighborhoods and church community -- on their way to eternal punishment in hell. May they not perish because we have no vision!

All glory to our Lord and King!
